Donald, a most distinguished soldier... saw much service in India. He entered the service as a Cadet in 1781 and was gazetted Ensign in the same year; he became Lieutenant in 1783 and rose to Captain in 1796; he was promoted Major in 1808, Lieutenant-Colonel in 1814, Colonel in 1829 and Major-General in 1837. He served with distinction in the wars against Tippoo Sahib and the Rohilla tribesmen. He was severely wounded in the Siege of Calpée in December 1803. In 1809 he was appointed Commanding Officer at Moradabad and after some military service in the Deccan, he beame a Commandant of the Fortress of Agra. In 1818 he was awarded the C.B. and in 1838 the K.C.B. for his distinguished military service. For some years, he held the tack of Trumpan. he married Mary, eldest daughter of John MacKenzie of Kincraig, in 1813, with issue, an only daughter, Mary, 1815-40, who married John MacLeod, last of Raasay, with issue, an only daughter, Mary Julia Hastings, 1836-39. General Sir Donald MacLeod, K.C.B., died in London on 9th August 1843. Lady MacLeod (Mary MacKenzie) died at Leamington on 21st August 1841.
