Rev. Dr. John MacLeod Campbell, well known in ecclesiastical circles
'as the hero of the famous Rhu heresy case'. He taught the universality
of the Atonement and this give office to some of his parishioners. As a
result he was deposed by the General Assembly in 1832 by 119 votes to
6. Thereafter he preached for some years in Glasgow. He was made a
Doctor of Divinity by the University of Glasgow in 1868. He married in
1838 Mary, daughter of John Campbell of Kilninver, with issue, 4 sons
and 2 daughters.
