William Couperus, born at Pondicherry on 16th September 1805,
...joined the Madras Army as a Cadet on 13th February 1821. He was
attached at various dates to the 15th REgiment Madras Native Infantry,
20th Regiment N.I., 42nd Regiment N.I., 29th REgiment N.I., 14th Regiment
N.I. and the 1st Regiment N.I. He served in the First Burmese War
1824-25 and was wounded at the capture of Syriam. Later as teh
Brigadier-Genera 16th August 1859, he was commandant at Jeulnah
1859-61, at Malabar and Canara, 1861-62, and of the Nagpore Subsidiary
Force 1862-63. As Major-General, 2nd June 1863, he commanded the
Pegu Division and in 1864 the Ceded District in Burma until 1868. He
was Colonel Regimentally of the 30th Madras N.I. from 12th March 1865
to 1869. He came home in 1868 and resided at Bath. He was promoted
Lt.-General on 16th October 1877. He retired under Royal Warrant on
31st December 1877 and died in London on 4th April 1880. he married on
28th December 1840 at St. Andrew's Church, Calcutta, Jane Ann,
1820-82, daughter of Major Donald MacLeod (of the Bernisdale family),
1779-1840, who, in 1837, became Inspector-General of Army Hospitals
in Bengal, with issue.
