Became a Lieutenant in the 81st Highlanders from 1778-1783. He later
joined the Black Watch (73rd Regiment) and served in India. He was
present at the siege of Pondicherry, the expedition against Ceylon in
1796 and the capture of Seringapatam in 1799. He was promoted Captain
in 1795, retired in 1800 but remained in India as Deputy Commissary of
Musters King's Troops until 1812. He married Catherine Johanna Couperus,
daughter of the Governor of Malacca, with issue.
