Was born on 21st September 1828, and died on 31st August 1892. He
studied at the University of Glasgow, where he took a high place in the
class of Philosophy. He then studied MEdicine, in which he graduated
with the hightest distinction in 1853. He immediately afterwards went
to Paris to continue his studies. During the Crimean War he worked for a
time in hospitals in London and then went out to the seat of war, where
he was appointed a Staff-Surgeon in the Army Medical Service, with the
rank of Major, and bore the hardships in the Crimean campaign until
peace came in April 1856. In 1859 he was appointed to the Chair of
Surgery in Anderson College, Glasgow, and ten years later he succeeded
Sir Joseph Lister as Professor of Surgery in the University of Glasgow,
an appointment he held until the time of his death. He was knighted for
his eminent services in 1887, and was appointed Surgeon-in-ordinary to
Queen Victoria in Scotland. The University of St. Andrews honoured Sir
George with a doctorate of Laws (LL.D.) in 1892. Dr. George H. B. MacLeod
married, in 1859, Sophia, daughter of Henry Houldsworth, one of the
merchant princes of Glasgow (descended from the Houldsworths of
Coltness), [See MacLeod: THE BEGINNINGS OF THE HOULDSWORTHS
(1938).] [For a fuller biographical sketch of Sir George H. B. MacLeod see
THE BRAVE SONS OF SKYE (pp. 150-2), based on a Memoir read by his son,
the Rev. William H. MacLeod, minister of Buchanan, to the Royal Society
of Edinburgh on 16th January 1893. See also DICTIONARY OF NATIONAL
BIOGRAPHY (XXXV, p. 217).]
