Norman was born on 9th January 1873, in Dundee, and educated at Totteridge Park School, Herts., George Watson's College, Edinburgh, and St. Andrews University (United College and St. Mary's). President of Misisonary Society and Shakespearian Society at St. Andrews University. Acted as Student Missionary at Achnacarry in 1895 and 1896. He was licensed on 8th May 1897, by the Presbytery of St. Andrews. Assistant at Pollokshields Parish, Glasgow, 1897 to 1902. Charge of Canonbie Parish, Dumfriesshire, 1902 to 1903. Ordained and Inducted to St. Garardine's Church, Lossiemouth, in 1903, where he was first minister. Inducted to Belhaven parish, Dunbar, on 7th January 1914 until 1927. Charge of St. John's parish, Glasgow, 1916 to 1917 while the Rev. J. Campbell was at the war. Inducted to St. Bride's Parish, Glasgow, on 8th June 1927. Officiating clergyman to troops at Westbarnes and Dunbar, 1914 to 1918. Member of School Board in Lossiemouth and Dunbar, and of Education Committee, Member of Parish Council at Dunbar. Masonic Grand Chaplain. Moderator of the Synod of Lothian and Tweedale. President of Scottish Church Society from 1935 to 1937. He was regarded as an authority on Church Worship on which he gave lectures to groups of ministers in Glasgow. "A true Christian, he had little patience with sectarian differences standing as barriers between the people of the Church of Christ. . . . I cannot be recall his keen and active mind, his sincerity and never failing courage, his genial personality, his unswerving faith and loyalty, . . . none sought his advice and help in vain. . . . He will be remember best as a true son of consolation." The Reverend Norman MacLeod married, on 25th September 1906, Mary Campbell, daughter of Peter Salmon Faill, Head Inspector and Superintendent of Branches of the Bank of Scotland, and his wife Mary Lyon Campbell, with issue. The Reverend Norman MacLeod died, as already noted, on 26th January 1942, and was succeeded in the representation of the family of Suardal by his only son.
