William Alexander MacKinnon was born in 1830, and studied medicine at Glasgow University. He joined the Army Medical Department, and rose to be Director-General. For his services in the wars of his time, he was knighted. Among other honours that came to him was his appointment as Honorary Surgeon to Queen Victoria. He died, in 1897, in London, and his ashes were buried in the family burial ground in Strath. He was unmarried.
