Was born, on 9th January 1766, and was appointed Ensigh, on 9th Marth
1793, in the 78th Foot Regiment. His promotion was rapid, becoming
Lieutenant on 2nd May 1794, Captin on 24th June 1795, Major in the
Princess Charlotte of Wales' Fencible Regiment on 9th June 1799, Major
(half-pay) on 25th June 1802, Major in the 5th Garrison Battalion on
14th September 1804, Major in the 56th Foot Regiment on 21st February
1805, Brevet-Lieut.-colonel on 1st January 1806, Lieut.-Colonel of the
78th Foot Regiment on 12th May 1808, Brevet-Colonel on 4th June 1813,
Major-General on 12th August 1819, Lieut.-General on 10th January
1837, and Colonel of the 77th Foot Regiment on 17th February 1840. He
served in Holland under the Duke of York. At home he was successful in
recruiting in the Highlands and Islands, and brought six hundred men to
the 78th Regiment, when he and Lord Seaforth raised th 2nd Battalion.
For his services to his country he was created a Companion of the Bath
(C.B.), and afterwards a Knight of the Hanoverian Order of the Guelphs
(K.C.H.). Sir John MacLeod died, on 3rd April 1851, in London. He married,
on 17th December 1814, Jane Gordon, daughter of Lieut.-Colonel William
Finlayson, Aberdeen, with issue.
