John went to France, and entered the service of the Elector of Hesse-Cassel in which he became a Colonel. He was back in Scotland in 1715, and was present at the battle of Sheriffmuir, where he was wounded. He returned to France, but he came back to Scotland to help the cause of the exiled Stuarts. Becoming involved in a Jacobite plot for the restoration of James II, John was obliged to escape to France for his life. He died at Sedan before or early in 1745. He married Effrica, daughter of Malcolm MacQueen, tacksman of Flodigarry, Trotternish, with issue, a son, John, who succeeded him in the representation of the family of Glendale. [The BANNATYNE MANUSCRIPT makes this John the son of a Norman, the son of Norman, who was killed at the battle of the Boyne in 1690, but there is no room in the Glendale pedigree for the first Norman. John was the son, not the grandson, of Norman, who fell at the battle of the Boyne.]
