Was born in 1743, and was educated at King's College, Aberdeen, where
he graduated M.A. in 1764. he studied for one session at the University
of Edinburgh. Licensed by the Presbytery of Skye on 7th August 1765, he
was ordained at Sleat, as his father's successor, on 9th October 1765.
He received the Doctorate of Divinity from King's College, Aberdeen, in
1803, and died on 25th April 1812. Dr. Martin Macpherson is spoken of as
having been a man of culture and ability. Dr. Johnson and James Boswell
met him at Corrichatachan, and afterwards at his iown Manse at Ostaig
in Sleat. He made a bad impression on Boswell at their first meeting,
but Boswell, on meeting him again, changed the opinion he had formerly
formed of him: 'I altered my opinion of Mr. Macpherson', he wrote. . . .'I
viewed him now with a most favourable eye, because I saw real goodness
in him. He was a young man with his own hair cut short and round, with
a pleasing ountenance and a most unaffected kindness'. [Boswell:

232-3.] Dr. Macpherson married, on 12th November 1766, Mary, daughter
of Lauchlan MacKinnon, 3rd of the MacKinnons of Corry, without issue.
They were second cousins. She died on 26th December 1808.
