Was born on 22nd June 1840, and was educated at Glasgow University, where he graduated B.A. in 1858. He was licensed by the PResbytery of Mull, and ordained to Newton-upon-Ayr on 8th August 1861, translated to Duns on 18th September 1862, and to Govan on 7th January 1875. Mr. MacLEod received the doctorate of divinity of Glasgow University on 27th April 1883. Dr. MacLeod was one of the founders of the Scottish Church Society. [Dr. John MacLeod was acknowledged leader in the Church of Scotland of the important movements in church ritual and order of which the Church Society was a principal exponent (FASTI ECCLESIAE SCOTICANAE, VIII, p. 294)] He died on 4th August 1898, and was buried at Keil, Morven. He married, on 25th August 1863, Alexa Mary (who died 20th May 1910), daughter of General Duncan Macpherson of Burgie, with issue.
