Lauchlan Charles (Sir), ...was born on 12th April 1848, and as a young man entered the office of THE SCOTSMAN, Edinburgh, where he gained his first newspaer experience. After serving for a period on the staff of the THE TIMES, London, he went to Melbourne, Australia, where he joined the staff of THE ARGUS in 1870. Ten years later he became Manager, and retained the post for nearly forty years, spending about half a century in furthering the interests of the paper. Mr. MacKinnon was knighted in 1916. He was compelled in 1919, through illness, to hand over the control of THE ARGUS to others, and retire to England, where at Downes, Crediton, Kent, he died in 1925. He married, as his first wife, Bessie, daughter of William Learmonth of Ettrick, Victoria, with issue. He married, as his second wife, Emily Grace Bundock, the niece and adopted daughter of his cousin, Lauchlan MacKinnon, one of the original founders of THE ARGUS, with issue.
