Was born in January 1895, and was educated at Glenalmond and
Sandhurt. In January 1914, he received a 2nd Lieutenant's commission in
The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). On the outbreak of the First World
War, he went to France with his Regiment, and served there and in
Belgium until he was wounded at Neuve Chapell on 10th March 1915. He
was promoted Captain 1916. He took up the study of Japanese, and
during 1921-2 he was attached to the Japanese army, and later was
employed in the Far-Eastern Section at the War Office. Owing to the
effects of his war wounds, he retired in 1922, and was awarded the
Order of the British Empire. He married, in 1921, Margaret Coutts, with
issue, a son and two daughters.
