Bannatyne was born, on 1st January 1860, at Hobart, Tasmania, and was
educated at Edinburgh Collegiate School, Edinburgh University, and Clare
College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in Law (1st Class Honours),
followed by M.A. in 1897. He entered the Indian Civil Service in 1878, by
examination, and arrived in India on 13th December 1880. he served in
Madras as Assistant-collector, Magistrate, and Forest Settlement
Officer. He became Head-Assistant in January 1889, Sub-collector and
joint-Magistrate in September 1894. He was appointed
Barrister-at-Law, Inner Temple, in 1894, and Collector and District
Magistrate in May 1897. He retired in 1905. he married, on 25th July
1882, at Bangalore, India, Morgiana Lilian, eldest daughter of Colonel
William Nesbitt Wroughton, [Colonel William Nesbitt Wroughton was
second son of John Chardin Wroughton, Madras Civil Service, and his
second wife, Georgiana Grace Chandler, whose father was a Member of
the Madras Council. John Chardin Wroughton was son of George
Wroughton (1759-1806) a Yorkshire Squire, who was son of the Rev.
William Wroughton (1716-70) of St. Thomas' Church, Salisbury. Colonel
William Nesbitt Wroughton's wife was Morgiana Charlotte Bird, daughter
of General John Francis Bird (1801-73), East India Company's Service
(INFORMATION FROM LIEUT.-COLONEL ROLAND T. W. MACLEOD).] Madras
Staff Corps and Inspector of Army Schools, with issue.
Bannatyne MacLeod died in 1937, and was succeeded in the
representation of the first MacLeods of Glendale by his second surviving
son.
