Margaret... on the death of her two brothers, became the heiress to her father's estates in Coigeach and Assynt as well as the Island of Lewis. She married the powerful Sir Roderick MacKenzie, Tutor of Kintail, (the marriage contract is dated 6th May 1605) [H. H. MacKenzie (1941) THE MACKENZIES OF BALLONE, p. 16.] who, along with his younger half brother, Alexander MacKenzie I of Coul, reduced the island of Lewis to MacKenzie dominion. Sir Roderick purchased Tarbat Ness and Milton from the Munroes and from this circumstance he and his descendants were known as MacKenzies of Tarbat. These descendants became Earls of Cromarty.
