THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section II, Edinburgh, The Clan MacLeod
Society, 1968, pp. 95, 99. Purchased Orbost, Skye.
The MacLeods of Orbost in the parish of Duirinish, Skye, were descended
from Norman MacLeod, 6th of the MacLeods of Berneray. When Norman
died in 1803, his great wealth was inherited by his wodow, and his three
surviving daughters: Isabella, who was unmarried, Anne, who was the
wife of Captain Norman MacLeod of Bernisdale in the parish of Snizort,
and Margaret, who was the wife of Angus Campbell of the Campbells of
Ensay in the Sound of Harris. After her father's death, Isabella, known as
ISEABAIL BHEARNARAIDH, continued in Berneray until 1807, when
Alexander Hume, her own first cousin, who had succeeded to Harris,
brought a successful action against her in the Court of Session, resulting
in her dispossession of the tack. She then made her home at Orbost,
where she died in 1839. As proprietrix of Orbost, she is designated here
1st of the MacLeods of Orbost.
Isabella MacLeod, who died in 1839, was succeeded at Orbost by her
nephew, William MacLeod, and his wife, Margaret Campbell, her niece.
