Was born, on 30th June 1870, at Malta, and was educated at Glenalmond
and Sandhurst. He joined the army, receiving a commission as Lieutenant
on 28th October 1890, and took part in 1891 in the Miranzai Expedition.
He joined the 2/3rd Gurkha Rifles on 26th August 1892, and two years
later he transferred to 1/2st Gurkha Rifles, and in November 1907 to the
1/7th, which regiment he commanded. In the First World War, he saw
service on the Suez Canal and in Mesopotamia, and was twice wounded,
losing his left eye in 1915. His Battalion was subsequently taken
prisoners at Kut, and he was awarded the D.S.O., and was mentioned in
despatches. Between 1916 and 1919, he held various appointments in
palestine and India. On 29th October 1920, he was invalided out of the
army. He died at Lagganallachie, Perthshire, on 9th July 1953, aged
eighty-three years. Lieut.-Colonel Torquil John MacLeod was 'very
athletic, exceptionally good=looking and a great sportsman, and retained
his youthful appearance up to the year of his death'. he married, in
January 1905, his cousin, Esme Laugharne, daughter of Christopher Allen
of Liss, Hants, with issue, a daughter, Gloria Esme ('Gem'), who was born,
on 26th February 1906, at Dharmsala, India, and married, in 1933,
Lieut.-Colonel Charles Gordon Borrowman of the 4th Gurkhas, a talented
Scottish artist, who died, on 14th October 1956, at Lagganallachie.
