SCOTLAND, Vol. 2, Second Edition, John Philip Wood, Esq., Editor,
Edinburgh, 1813, p. 14.
XX. Sir Alexander Macdonald of Slate, baronet, the only surviving son,
succeeded his father 1723, was almost the only person of consideration
in the Western Isles who did not join the Pretender's standard, in 1745;
was of course in favour with the Duke of Cumberland, who honoured him
with his correspondence and friendly assurances of regard. He died
suddenly at Bernera, on his way to London, to wait on his Royal Highness,
in November 1746, in the 36th year of his age.
He married, first, 5th April 1733, Anne, daughter of David Erskine of
Dun, in the county of Forfar, a Lord of Session and Justiciary, relict of
James, Lord Ogilvy, son of David, third Earl of Airly; and by her, who died
at Edinburgh, 27th November 1735, in her 27th year, had one son.
He married, secondly, 24th April 1739, Lady Margaret Montgomery,
ninth daughter of Alexander, ninth Earl of Eglintoun; and by her, who died
in Welbeck Stree, London, 30th March 1799, had three sons.
