!BIOGRAPHY: Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, THE PEERAGE OF SCOTLAND, Edinburgh, 1813, p. 481. Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh, the eldest son, born at Dundee 1636; studied three years at Bourges; was admitted a member of the Faculty of Advocates, 18th January 1659; held the office of King's advocate from 1666 to 1686, when he was displaced for not promoting the views of King James VII. for the introduction of popery; was restored 1688, dismissed at the revolution, and retired to England, resolving to spend his days at Oxford, where he arrived in September 1689. In a congregation of the regents of the university, he was admitted to study in the public library, 2d. June 1690. Next spring he went to London, and died in St. James's Street, Westminster, 8th May 1691. His body was carried to Scotland, and deposited, 26th June, in his mausoleum in the Grayfriars church-yard. His works in law and general literature were published in two volumes folio in 1716, under this title, "The Works of that eminent and learned lawyer Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh, advocate to King Charles II. and to King James VII., with many learned treatises of his, never before published." He married, first, Elisabeth, daughter of John Dickson of Hartree, a lord of session, by whom he had, 1. Agnes, born 2d January 1663, married to James, first Earl of Bute, and had issue; 2. John, born 15th April 1664, died young; 3. Simon, born 11th August 1665, died young; 4. Elisabeth, born 24th October 1667, married, first, to Archibald Cockburn, younger of Langton, by whom she had Margaret, born 17th January 1685; George, born 10th June 1686, died young; Sir Archibald Cockburn of Langton, born 14th November 1687, who died unmarried at London in January 1710, aeta. 23; and Elisabeth, born 18th June 1689; -- secondly, to the Hon. Sir James Mackenzie of Roystoun, a lord of session and justiciary, third son of George first Earl of Cromarty, by whom she had two daughters, Anne, married to Sir William Dick of Prestonfield, baronet, and Elisabeth, married to Sir John Stewart of Grandtully, baronet, and one son, George Mackenzie, born 18th October 1708, who died without issue, 15th May 1744, aeta. 36; 5. George, born 8th August 1669, died young. Sir George MacKenzie married, secondly, 14th January 1670, Margaret, daughter of Halyburton of Pitcur, and by her, who married, secondly, Roderick Mackenzie of Prestonhall, a lord of session, brother of the first Earl of Cromarty, had, 6. Jean, born 4th April 1671; 7. Margaret, born 27th July 1672; 8. James, born 8th October 1674, died young; and 9. George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh, who was served heir of his father 9th November 1691, and died without issue in October 1707. On his death, the succession to Sir George Mackenzie's extensive property became a subject of keen litigation, he having settled his estates, in failure of heirs male of his body, on the second son of Agnes Mackenzie, his eldest daughter, and the heirs male of their bodies, with other remainders. The cause has been already mentioned, Vol. I. page 285, note, where it will be seen that it was finally decided in favour of the Earl of Bute, only son of Agnes Mackenzie; and his Lordship's grandson, the Hon. James Archibald Stuart Wortly Mackenzie, is now in possession of the Rosehaugh estate, and other extensive property of Sir George Mackenzie.
