!BIOGRAPHY: Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, Baronet, THE BARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, Edinburgh, 1798, p. 377. XIII. William Macleod of that ilk, &c.Š married Agnes Fraser, daughter of Hugh fourth lord Lovat; and, upon his father's resignation, got a charter under the great seal, Willielmo Macleod, filio et haeredi apparenti Alexandri Macleod de Dunvegan, et Agnetae Fraser ejus sponsae, terrarum de Arrecardith, &c. &:c. in the north isles, dated 3d March 1540. By the said Agnes Fraser he had only one daughter, Mary, who was married, 1st, to Duncan Campbell of Castleswyne, younger of Auchinbrech; and, 2dly, to _____ Macneil of Bara; and had issue to both. This William dying without issue male, the representation devolved upon his brother, Donald.

William was born about 1505, and married (marr. contr. dated at Lovat, 13th April 1540) Agnes, daughter of Hugh, 3rd Lord Fraser of Lovat, with issue, an only daughter, Mary. Tradition says that William, who, at an early period of his married life, realized he would not have an heir-male of his own body, became obsessed by the fear that the clan would not accept Mary as chief, and treated his younger brothers, Donald and Norman, so unkindly that they left home. He entirely alienated himself from his clansmen and spent the last years of his life shut up in Dunvegan Castle. He died in September 1551, and was buried in the Cathedral of St. Clement at Rodel, Harris. he was succeeded by his daughter. [Agnes Fraser, after william's death, married (marr. contr., dated 2nd May 1562) Alexander Bayne of Tulloch, with issue (THE SCOTTISH GENEALOGIST, II, No. 1, pp. 3-4). She died on 29th January 1594-5 (Warrand: SOME FRASER PEDIGREES, 1934, p. 7).
