!SOURCE: Rev. Dr. Donald MacKinnon and Alick Morrison, THE MACLEODS:
THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section III, "MacLeod Cadet Families",
Edinburgh, The Clan MacLeod Society, 1970, p. 164. Nicknamed 'Old
Gibraltar', who had served in the 71st Highlanders during the heroic
siege of Gibraltar 1779-1783. During the siege, the soldiers at one time
were reduced to eating thistles. The enemy apparently covered their
ships with wool and later leather, which the bullets of the defenders
could not penetrate. MacPhee thought of a method of defeating this
stratagem by making the bullets red hot. The idea proved most effective.
'Old Gibraltar' came to Canada and died there.
