Was born on 29th November 1811, and succeeded as 16th of the
MacLeans of Boreray. He studied medicine in Edinburgh and, in 1832,
became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons, and, in 1833,
obtained the degree of M.D. of Edinburgh University. He became
Asistant-Surgeon in the Madras Army on 27th April 1838. He saw much
service in India and China, and held several important posts. In 1860, Dr.
MacLean was made a Companion of the Bath (C.B.) in recognition of his
eminent services. He was appointed Honorary Surgeon to Queen Victoria,
and promoted to the rank of Surgeon-General when he accepted the post
of Professor of Military Medicine at the Army Medical School at Netly. In
1865 he published his autobiography -- MEMORIES OF A LONG LIFE.
Surgeon-General MacLean died, on 10th November 1898, at Oakleigh,
Sidmouth, Devon. He married, on 9th September 1845, Louisa, daughter
of John MacPherson, factor for Sleat, with issue.
