Graduated M.A. in Aberdeen in 1785. he was ordained missionary in Duirinish in 1790 and became Minister of Harris in 1806. He stated on the 1st April 1811 that in his parish, there was a population of 3,000, "and among them there not 200 that can read English, and none capable of reading Gaelic alone." He married in 1802, Isabel, daughter of Sheriff MacDonald of Greshornish, with issue.
