Norman was born on 6th September 1920. Educated at Glasgow Academy and Strathallan School; Edinburgh University and Lincoln College, Oxford; M.A. (Oxon.). During the Second World War he served in the Royal Navy in H.M.S. Glengyle, H.M. Destroyer Marne and H. M. Cruiser Diadem, taking part in Commando raids on Bardia and Litani River, Syria; the evacuations of Greece and Crete; Malta and Russian convoys; the Dieppe Raid and the North Africa Invasion; operations in the Dodecanese and off the west coast of Italy and the bombardments of Rhodes, La Spezia and Genoa. Leading Seaman 1944; Lieutenant R.N.R. History Master at Durham School since 1950 and House Master of the Caffinites Durham School 1953-68. Committee of the Baronage of Scotland 1963. Norman was granted Suardal, the ancient home of his family, by Feu Charter from the 28th Chief, Dame Flora MacLeod of MacLeod, in 1959, and matriculated his Arms in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (Volume 43, folio 139) of Date 11th January 1961, Court of the Lord Lyon, Edinburgh. He married on 2nd September 1948, Sheila Mary, educated at Cheltenham Ladies College and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, daughter of Robert Maclagan Gorrie, Esq., D.Sc., Conservator of Forests, Indian Forests Service (whose Arms are recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland, Folio No. 44/107 of date 30th May 1962, Court of the Lord Lyon, Edinburgh, and Sydney Grace, daughter of Bailie Arthur Blake Easterbrook, Edinburgh, and his wife Grace Monteath Cameron, with issue.
