According to the BANNATYNE MANUSCRIPT, William was studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh when his father emigrated to North Carolina in 1770, and remained in Scotland. After he finished his medical course, he settled, first in South Uist and afterwards in Harris, as a doctor, and married Isabella, daughter of Alexander MacLeod, 2nd of the MacLeods of Luskintyre, Harris, with issue. Dr. William MacLeod, described by the Rev. John Lane Buchanan, S.P.C.K. missionary in Harris, as 'our little tyrannical country Surgeon', [TRAVELS IN THE WESTERN HEBRIDES (1793), p. 67. The Rev. John Lane Buchanan is not a very reliable authority, and his statements must not be accepted unless confirmed by trustworthy sources.] left Luskintyre about the beginning of the century, and settled at Borline in the MacLeod 'country' in Skye, where he died on 10th August 1811. He was succeeded in the representation of the MacLeods of Glendale by his eldest son. [MacKenzie is wrong in stating in his HISTORY OF THE MACLEODS (p. 212) that Dr. William MacLeod was succeeded by his third son.]
