He had a precept of clare constat, whereby John, Lord of the Isles, declared him heir to Torquil in the lands of Lewis and Waternish, dated 3rd November 1464. He witnessed the charter of John, Lord of the Isles, to Hugh MacDonald of the lands of North Uist; the charter was granted at Aros, and is now accepted as being properly dated 28th June 1469. He also figures in documents dated in 1478/79, 1492 and 1494; and the list could be extended. Perhaps his last appearance on record is on 2nd June 1496, when he grants a charter of the lands of Assynt to Neil MacLeodand to Angus, his son. It has been stated that Roderick was twice married, first to Margaret, daughter of John MacLeod of Dunvegan, with issue: (1) A son, who was mortally wounded at thebattle of Bloody Bay (Bàgh na Fala) off the north coast of Mull, dying at Dunvegan when on his way back to Lewis. Roderick is said (on doubtful authority) to have married, as his second wife, Agnes, daughter of Kenneth MacKenzie of Kintail, with issue: (2) Torquil, of whom next (as VIII). (3) Malcolm, of whom after Torquil. He also had issue: (4) A daughter, who married Allan MacLeod of Gairloch. (5) Margaret, who married Lachlan Mackinnon. (6) Ann, who married MacDougall of Dunollie. (7) A daughter, apparently, who married James MacDonald of Castle Camus, Skye.

Roderick MacLeod of Lewes, who succeeded [Torquil], and is mentioned in a charter under the great seal to his son, hereafter narrated. "He married Margaret, daughter of John MacLeod of that ilk and Herries, and died soon after his father, leaving issue a son and successor."

He married Mary, daughter of Macleod of Herries, and had three sons, Roderick, Torquil, and Malcolm. The eldest, Roderick, being killed in the battle of the Bloody Bay, in 1480, where he was fighting in the cause of John, Earl of Ross, and Lord of the Isles. The second son, Torquil, succeeded his father about 1495.

This chief appears on record in 1476, 1478, 1493, 1494, and 1495. In a charter of 1475, given under the Great Seal in favour of Hugh MacDonald of Sleat, Roderick is designated, "Roderico MacLeod de Leoghys". He warmly espoused the cause of John, Lord of the Isles against his bastard son, Angus Og. Roderick married, as his first wife, Margaret, daughter of John MacLeod VI of Harris (Iain Borb), with issue a son, who was so badly wounded in the Battle of Bloody Bay in Mull in 1480 that he died on his way home to Dunvegan Castle. Roderick married, secondly, Agnes, daughter of Kenneth MacKenzie of Kintail, with issue.

Macleod of Lewis Charter Chest?] He appears as a witness in a charter of John, Lord of the Isles, now dated at 28th June 1469, [RMS (II) no. 2286.] and in other documents of 1478/9, 1492 and 1494. [RMS (II) nos. 1419, 2221; R. W. Munro (1961) jp. 143.] His last known dated record is of 2nd June 1496 when he granted lands in Assynt to Neil Macleod and his son, Angus. [C.Frser=Mackintosh, TGSI (XXIV) p. 380. He married (1) Margaret, daughter of John MacLeod of Dunvegan. [Sir Robert Douglas (1798) p. 384.] According to the clan historian, A. MacKenzie, Roderick married (2) Agnes, daughter of Kenneth MacKenzie of Kintail, but there seems to be no good authority for this. [Matheson, TGSI (LI) pp. 330, 335, n. 80.] The MacKenzies did not emerge until after the forfeiture of the earldom of Ross in 1476 and would therefore have been unlikely to contract marriage alliances with the chiefs of Macleod of Lewis at that date. Nevertheless, Roderick and his second wife, whoever she was, had issue.

!NOTE: On page 8, Morrison shows this to be Roderick VIII of Lewis; however, on page 11, he has him as Roderick VII of Lewis. However, the VII of Lewis is Torquil. He should actually be IV of Lewis, according to Matheson. See RIN 406.
