Lt.-General Sir Arthur Lyttleon-Annesley, KI.C.B., K.D., K.C.V.O., ...was born on 2nd September 1837. He was educated at Harrow and was appointed to the 11th Prince Albert's own Hussars, after he entered the Army in 1854. He served with his Regiment in the Crimean War 1854-56, and took part in the battle of Tchernaya and the siege and fall of Sebastopol. After a period at home, he sailed in command of his Regiment round the Cape of Good Hope to India in a sailing ship, the last Regiment to do so. He served in India for 10 years and returned home when appointed to the Staff of His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. In 1877 he brought his Regiment home by the Suez Canal and, retiring from the 11th Hussars, he was appointed Aide-de-Camp to His Royal Highness, the Duke of Cambridge. Not long afterwards he was appointed Assistant Adjutant General at the Horse Guards and held the appointment for several years. Thereafter he beame the Adjutant General of the Bombay Army and held the post for 5 years with the approval of the 3 ommanders-in-Chief under whom he served. He returned to England in 1881 and was selected to command the North British District (which included Scotland) for a period of 5 years with the rank of Major-General. Thereafter he became Lt.-General and was offered the important command of Portsmouth, which he declined for private reasons.. He died unmarried at Weybridge on 16th February 1926.
