Society, 1968, p. 110.
Was born on 25th July 1825, and became an expert trapper and hunter.
In 1852, while in New York arranging to go to Australia, he met the
famous American shipowner, Lewis Tappan, with the result that instead
of emigrating to Australia, he took up shipping and established a line of
ships between New York and Australia, in which he was very successful,
gaining the respect of the Americans and Canadians. In 1883, on the
recommendation of the Marquis of Lorne, Governor-General of Canada,
Roderick William Cameron was knighted by Queen Victoria. He married,
in 1860, Anne Fleming (born 1839), daughter of Nathan Leavenworth and
his wife, Alice Johnstone (descended from an old Scottish family, long
settled in New York), with issue.
