Chief of the MacLeods of Raasay: John MacLeod

The first Clan MacLeod Society in Canada was founded in Glengarry County, Ontario in 1936. Since then, eleven Societies have been established in four regions across the country. The Societies belong to a national organization: the Clan MacLeod Societies of Canada, which represents Canada in the world-wide Associated Clan MacLeod Societies.

The objectives of the society include:
  • to strengthen fellowship among MacLeods and clansfolk generally
  • to encourage the study in Canada of the history of Clan MacLeod
  • to publish a Canadian Clan MacLeod newsletter
  • to encourage Celtic Arts including music, piping and dancing
  • to preserve places and objects of Clan MacLeod interest
  • to identify persons and events worthy of recognition by Clan MacLeod
  • to assist in the establishment of Canadian Clan MacLeod archives.
Clan MacLeod Societies across Canada contribute toward local events and projects in support of Canadian Scottish heritage. The first two volumes of a genealogical study of the MacLeods of Canada have been published and additional volumes are planned. There is a major event on the MacLeod calendar every two years.

Every four years Clan Parliament is held at Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye. The next one is to be held in 2010.  In the intervening even numbered years there are also North American gatherings, alternating between Canada and the USA. . All members of Clan MacLeod are invited to attend these events and some 300 or more MacLeods from all over the world can be expected to participate.
