Historic MacLeod Book Re-Printed – ‘The Island Clans During Six Centuries’
11 May 2025First published in 1974 but out of print for many years, Dame Flora – The Biography of Dame Flora MacLeod of MacLeod has been republished. The book was written by Anne Wolrige Gordon who was married to Patrick, grandson of Dame Flora. Patrick was twin brother of John MacLeod of MacLeod, our 29th Chief.
Dame Flora was born in 1878 at 10 Downing Street. She had an austere English childhood and disappointing marriage. In 1935, at the age of fifty-seven, after her father, Sir Reginald, 27th Chief, died, she became the 28th Chief of Clan MacLeod and inherited Dunvegan Castle.
During WW2 Dame Flora kept open house at Dunvegan to MacLeods in the overseas armed services forging many of the links which transformed her life after the war. It was then she started her famously successful clan tours, first to Canada then the USA, Australia and New Zealand. In these tours, and in the Clan Parliaments at Dunvegan from 1956, she was at her best, charming the media and overwhelming everyone with her indomitable personality and unbounding enthusiasm.
This loving but by no means uncritical biography presents a fascinating and rounded picture of a remarkable personality whose life spanned almost a century.
Now republished by the Associated Clan MacLeod Societies, this new 212 page edition is available as both print on demand or Kindle ebook through Amazon outlets worldwide – more details in the Clan MacLeod website merchandising section.
