15 April 2025In 1930, the Rev. Canon Roderick MacLeod published the results of many years research through the private papers of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod held in Dunvegan Castle. Canon Roderick used these papers and other sources to examine the structure and workings of Scottish Highland and Island clans from the days of the Lords of the Isles through to the 20th Century.
He explores clan structure, the home life of both the common folk and the gentry, clan warfare and disputes with the Kings of Scotland and the Government, the disruption caused by the Jacobite rebellions and subsequent transition from the old clan system to modern times. He gives insights into how Highland Chiefs managed (or mismanaged) their finances and how, in many cases, they lost their estates.
Finally, Canon Roderick relates some traditional folklore and fairy tales recited around the ceilidh fire through many generations.
This new addition to the Clan MacLeod Publications series is now published as a 181 page paperback by the Associated Clan MacLeod Societies and is available as print on demand through Amazon worldwide – more details in the Clan MacLeod website merchandising section:
